People always dig a way out from any cyclone.
After the successive rise of smuggled and illegal phones, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) started to block them all since the 30th of April.
PTA started to crack down all the unregistered phones which took a delay of several months but finally blocked all the unverified phones in April.
But people have tried another way to unblock their PTA blocked phones under black market at the lower price rates of Rs. 2000 to 3000 depending on the handset.
Senator Mian Mohammad Ateeq Sheikh raised the issue of cracking the blocked phones was during a meeting between the Senate Standing Committee and the Ministry of Information Technology.
PTA blocked phones are being unblocked for cheap rates of rupees 2000 to 3000 that would have drawn the national treasury more than rupees 30,000.
He showed a receipt of unblocking a PTA blocked phone by a person in the black market during the meeting to prove that.
Device Identification Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS) is a system launched by authorities to block unregistered smartphones. The main agenda was to restrict all illegal or non-complaint phones operating in the country.
There are around 3 million illegal and non-custom paid smartphones in Pakistan according to PTA. A question was raised in the meeting that if people started unblocking the PTA blocked phones in this notorious way then all the efforts made to curb them would go in vain.
It is also notable that currently there are 2.8 million phones illegally operating in the country which will be blocked in four phases. The first phase is already in operation since April 2019 which yield tremendous results.
Yet, the overall success rate still depends on the final results of all phases.
Additionally, in this regard, the respective authorities should also trigger the procedure to seize the cracking of PTA blocked phones unless their tax amount is paid.
